Representative Hockey:

There are three national representative leagues, U15, U18 and Women’s (NZWIHL). This is an extension of our junior program in Auckland and players are expected to make a commitment to the squad. All teams will travel around the country to play against each other.

Four teams compete in this league, Queenstown, Dunedin, Canterbury and Auckland. Auckland representatives are selected by coaches from the local club competition. The team is coached for a large part of the season before competition which generally takes part during the mid to end of the season. Members of playing away teams are billeted by the home team players except during the finals weekend when teams stay together in prearranged accommodation. Girls are eligible to compete in this league.

The New Zealand Women’s Ice Hockey League (NZWIHL) was first established in 2014 and was originally set up to be played over the New Zealand summer, to help support and prepare the National Women’s team (Ice Fernz) for their IIHF World Championships in March. With the addition of a National Under 18 Women’s team, the league now acts as a great opportunity for female players of all ages to develop their skills and play together prior to the start of the World Championship season.

The minimum age to play in this league is 13 years old.
